CLASSIC COUNTRY

FOR THE MODERN WORLD.

Charlie’s latest full-length album Signs, out June 5, is about her epic journey of self-discovery following profound loss. Embarking on a spontaneous journey across the US from Rhode Island to Alaska and back again, the songs reflect both the trials and tribulations she encountered and the signs she learned to recognize along her path, guiding and sometimes redirecting her to the truths she learned and answers she sought.

It seems almost prophetic that Charlie was born in the shadow of Providence, Rhode Island. The word providence is defined as “the protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power.” Three decades later, Charlie would discover a synchronicity as both would be significant influences leading to the inner peace and outer confidence she had long sought, yet had long eluded her.

Having survived a childhood and early adulthood framed by trauma, dysfunction, stops, starts and dead ends, Charlie deeply understood that hurt people, hurt people.  Unfortunately she had started shouldering much of her family’s burdens at a young age. It was now 2022 and finally everything she had previously worked so hard for was now within easy reach. Her 2021 debut Country album Ramble On had been acclaimed and in the spotlight. However the album’s success garnered attention and pressure her youth was ill prepared for. The focus triggered her inner critic amplifying uneasy feelings of insecurity and unworthiness while creating endless fear and anxiety that haunted both her sleep and waking hours. It seemed like everything was in the palm of her hand, but it didn’t feel that way and things were about to get worse.

The horizon loomed, fraught with more hardships and unexpected endings. Suddenly she now faced a final rupture with her boyfriend, the ending of her close friendship and working relationship with her guitarist, her grandmother’s bout with Covid that forever changed her, and the final blow - her father’s unexpected early passing under tragic circumstances. She had nothing left to lose on the heels of life and with that, the journey for answers, reasons and redemption began, but she had to get lost to do it. Now was the time to face the shadows. Nature had always been her safe haven in childhood, chasing butterflies, scavenging four leaf clovers and listening to the melodies of songbirds. If Mother Nature saved her before, could she do it again?

She packed her life into her Toyota Yaris and hit the road for distant vistas and parts unknown. She wandered the American highways without a plan, not knowing where she was going, how long she’d be gone or what she was looking for. As she drove, she listened to tapes and tunes of her icons and influencers - John Denver, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and the radio offerings of classic Country. She took in breathtaking landscapes, mountains, valleys and streams, sunlight and snow, open air, the scent of nature and Ponderosa pines. Fiery sunsets and starry nights stilled her mind and calmed her heart. Nature fed her spirituality, eased her pain and encouraged her to face her fears and pay attention to the many signs and scenarios serving to teach, test, validate and redirect her life.

The unknown became a dear friend she embraced openly, leading her to many earth angels, both young and old as well as strangers who offered her nothing but kindness; people with something to share whom she would have previously shunned or avoided. Some moved her along her path, others redirected it. Through it all she shed the shackles of the past, healed her heart, learned how to love herself unconditionally and unearthed her authentic self. Finally recognizing all the signs that God/Source/The Universe has been sending her all along, her journey continues, but the path is now known, well lit and being travelled by the newly empowered spirit and soul of Charlie Marie. Her wish is to touch the hearts of listeners in the same way that facing her fears, wrestling her insecurities and traveling uncharted territory opened up and empowered her in ways she never believed possible. Charlie urges everyone to pay attention to the signs along your path.

Signs isn’t easily categorized musically as it was influenced by her icons and encouraged by so many talented artists in the making of it. It’s safe to say Charlie’s writing and singing is rooted in Country, which laid a strong foundation allowing space for expansion. With its sound growing from classic Country and flavored by the influences of Folk-Rock, Americana, and even a measure of Fifth Dimension for luck, it’s safe to say it will undoubtedly ring true to her established fans, critics and newcomers alike.

The current album was produced by These Wild Plains (a Boston-based country-rock band) with assistance from Ben Klise, and recorded at Rusty’s Recording Studio in Salem MA. Signs arrives following her 2021 debut album Ramble On. The Soundly released album made in-roads, especially at streaming services, with songs added to taste making playlists like Spotify's "Cosmic Country,” “Indigo,” Apple Music's "Southern Craft," and Tidal's "Country Calm.”

Five years later, Signs continues drawing a line between the modern day and country music's golden years, highlighting a songwriter who isn't just steeped in tradition, but adds her own contributions to the classic cannon too. It's a snapshot of an artist in motion. Give it a listen and follow Charlie Marie’s journey allowing her vocals to move your emotions while telecaster tones and steel slides ripple like waves across a still pond. Put your hand on your heart and feel the rhythm and beat of the music, within and without.
